AMZChef Slow Juicer Review: Affordable Masticating Juicer Tested

Credit: https://www.simpleitaliancooking.com By Liz

I’ve been a fan of juicing ever since my husband first introduced me to it years ago. Juicing is one of the easiest ways to pack extra nutrients into your day, often more than you’d get from just eating raw veggies.

Over the years, I’ve tried all kinds of juicers—centrifugal, slow masticating, and even high-end machines. In this post, I’m sharing my honest AMZChef Slow Juicer review. If you’re wondering whether this budget-friendly masticating juicer is worth it for your home, you’ll get the pros, cons, and my real experience.

The Irony of this Juicer Review

But first, let me tell you the incredible irony of how I even got to the point of writing this post for you. Recently, health issues had us pulling out our old juicer and starting a stricter diet to get back on track.

So, a few weeks into our juicing I was approached by this company to test out and review the AMZChef. At first I was unsure until I actually looked at the specs on Amazon. I already knew what I didn’t want in a juicer so it was easy to see right away if it would even be worth my time to review it.

So I accepted and they sent me this juicer so I could test it out and write an honest review about my experience.

Let’s get started.

Who is AMZChef?

AMZChef is a brand that centers around home cooks. That means their products are budget-friendly and perform well. They aren’t the Maserati of kitchen brands, but they certainly aren’t a low-quality brand either.

Some of my best purchases were from “budget” appliance brands.

About the Juicer and First Impressions

AMZChef Slow Juicer 036

This juicer is a slow masticating juicer, which means it uses an auger to slowly crush and grind the veggies into very small pieces. It then squeezes out the juice by pushing those pieces through a fine mesh filter.

  • Pros: the slow speed reduces heat and preserves nutrients, unlike a centrifuge type juicer – think of the original Jack LaLanne’s juicers.
  • Cons: due to its slower speed, it takes about 3 minutes per juice.

Sturdy plastic. Out of the box, I noticed the quality of the food-grade plastic. Most juicers are plastic, and I’ve used a few that have broken because the plastic was so cheap. But this one had a strong sturdy feel to it.

Few Parts. This juicer had no small parts and was easy to assemble. The parts are:

  • The main hopper
  • the masticating auger
  • the base that holds the built-in filter
  • two cups – one for catching the pulp and one for catching the juice
  • And of course the feed pusher (which I barely use)

Upright juicer vs horizontal. This means it sits on your countertop and it’s vertical in operation – like a blender.

  • Pros: takes up less countertop space than other horizontal juicers.
  • Cons: Won’t fit/work underneath kitchen cabinets.

Size and Weight. It’s not too heavy and I found it easy to move around. It has suction cups on the bottom of the base to help it not slide around which is nice.

  • Size: 15.3″ (length) x 7.4″ (width) x 15.3″ (height)
  • Weight: approximately 10.5 pounds

Impressive Feed Tube

Let’s face it, every marketing photo a juicer company uses makes it look like you can fit your whole vegetable drawer inside the hopper! They just shrink the sizes of the food to make the hopper look larger.

There were two reasons I was happy to accept this juicer to test. First, it’s opening feed tube at the top is an impressive 5.8″ wide. Other juicers I’ve tried even with 3.5″ widths were still a bit narrow for loading up the hopper without having to cut everything down to little pieces.

And sure enough, the feed tube was awesome. I still had to cut up the carrots per the instructions and so I also cut up the apples to be on the safe side.

How Well Does it Juice

When I test a juicer, the two main things I look at for performance are the pulp and ease of use.

Pulp Dryness

This is the best way for me to determine how good a juicer performs. The drier the pulp, the more juice you get — and this pulp was impressively dry.

I even put the pulp through a juicer press (another type of juicer we have) and the amount of liquid that came out was minimal at best. That’s a good sign.

So far, I’m really liking this juicer.

Pulp Filtration

Another test is to see how much pulp actually gets filtered out. The less pulp in the drink the better. It’s not that pulp is bad, but you want your digestive energy to go towards absorbing and processing the nutrients in the juice, not digesting the fibrous pulp.

I was very impressed with the lack of pulp. We also use the Norwalk juicer for heavy juicing protocols, and that uses a grind plus a press to ensure 100% pulp free juice. In comparison to the Norwalk (a $2000 industrial juicer), it was VERY close. I was extremely shocked and surprised.

Juicing Vegetables

carrot juiceI tested the juicer by making a carrot apple juice and a green juice with apple. The carrot apple juice had no issues.

I still wish I didn’t have to chop the carrots, but that’s a minor issue. What is confusing however is that the manual says to chop the carrots, while the Amazon description says the carrots can be whole.

Either way, everything tasted great and I was happy.

vegetable juice

When testing it with a green juice, I used heads of romaine. I hand tore them so the pieces wouldn’t be too big. The green apple I cut up and added it to the mix. It worked well but not as great as the carrots.

It didn’t grind all the lettuce and a little bit of the apple was stuck on the auger. I did try to use the pushing rod (which is a great design) but that only helped a little.

Loud or Quiet?

I don’t believe there is a juicer on the market that is super quiet. They all have motors and will make some sort of noise. This one isn’t too loud at all. It was in my opinion, average, and it didn’t bother me at all.

Clean Up

slow juicer SJ036 clean upClean up was a breeze for this masticating juicer. There is only one spot that is hard to clean and that is where the pulp extrudes. However, once you pull out the rubber stopper, it’s much easier.

The manual advises not to put any parts in the dishwasher. Usually you can run basic parts through the top rack with no heat dry for juicers, but the manual didn’t say that. It just says to not use the dishwasher at all.

Which is no big deal really because there are so few parts and they are easy to clean.

Also to note, the filter is easy to clean with the supplied brush. It was a breeze and I had no issues.

Overall, I have to admit, this juicer surpassed my expectations.
